Houston Technology Collective

The Technology Collective of Houston is one of the newest members to have an office at the Caroline Collective. They are a community of technology hobbyists that meet to work on projects and discuss ideas. These "hacker spaces" are prevalent in cities all over the world.

Erdos Miller is looking forward to partnering with the TCH to teach community outreach classes. The tentative plan is to have three sessions. The first will be on microcontrollers, featuring the ATmega128, the second will be geared towards PCB layout and design, while the third will focus on writing software.

Offshore Technology Conference

OTC 2009

The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) is held at Reliant Park in Houston, TX annually during the first week of May. OTC is the "world’s foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection." In spite of the economy, there were over 66,000 attendees this year. Erdos Miller talked with many interesting companies about not only using their products for our own development, but offering our services and seeking partners for future generations of downhole electronics.

Erdos Miller also attended the Next Wave, a program for young professionals. John Hofmeister started the event with an engaging keynote speech, followed by a panel session with industry experts. The highlight of the program was the breakout sessions, which had small round table discussions on a variety of industry related topics. Topics included "Developing a successful business development career" and "Growing your global network." Overall it was an informative event with abundant networking opportunities.

Erdos Miller arrives at the Caroline Collective

Erdos Miller has moved into an office at the Caroline Collective (4820 Caroline St. Houston, TX 77004). The office is located in the museum district just south of flourishing Midtown and north of the Medical Center. EM will be sharing a space with companies doing work in similar fields.

The Caroline Collective is a coworking space where people can work and share ideas. Coworking stems from the idea that like-minded individuals can come together and form a community around collaboration. We have all faced professional challenges and overcome them, why not share our expertise with others? Less time is wasted learning the same lessons others already have and there is a lot more potential for innovation.

The Caroline Collective has a free section for drop-ins, and there is free wi-fi and coffee available. There is a productive atmosphere, but there is also more of a social aspect than at a coffee shop due to the vast opportunities interact and learn from others.

Cypress PSoC

Cypress Semiconductors produces a Programmable System-on-Chip that has configurable digital and analog peripherals. FPGA’s can be programmed for various digital functions such as timers, counters, PWM’s, etc. The PSoC is innovative in that it also has analog blocks that can be assigned to analog modules, such as analog to digital converters (ADCs), digital to analog converters (DACs), amplifiers, filters, voltage regulators, and many more. This kind of flexibility allows for rapid prototyping and can reduce the bill of materials for production. Also, the PSoC resources are dynamically reconfigurable, so the internal resources can be changed on the fly, as needed by the application.

Cypress provides all of the necessary software tools for rapid development on the PSoC. PSoC designer is where the user assigns blocks to certain analog and/or digital functions, and PSoC programmer is needed to put the compiled hex file in Flash.

One application is PSoC® CapSense™ technology, which was used on the scroll wheel of the Apple Ipod.
